New year Resolutions

Yep, its that time of year again, when we say farwell to one and a big hello to the next! And what comes with a new year? New year resolutions of course!
So with my main resolution being all about using my creativity more, stash busting and all things handmade, I thought it was about time I revived my blog, or at least tried!
So goodbye 2011! Let 2012 be the year of creative greatness!

organising…

Yes, it’s that time of year when… there’s not much happening in the world of Cate, and I have resorted to organising my materials all nice and pretty amongst time spent sewing. Today it was my threads…

before…

After….

Oh, don’t get me wrong, they won’t stay that way for long! I have already started scratching through them looking for colours! But for the moment at least, there is not big tangles!

pink and purple owl quilt…

I have been in sewing mode as of late, you just can’t get me away from my machine!

Yesterday I finished this owl quilt…

It started out with piecing the pink 4inch squares. It looked a little plain, so I decided to applique some owls onto it. It took me a while to decide what look I was going for with the owls, these ones turned out just perfect, they’re cute, and little and babyish!

I machine pieced the pink, needle point hand sewed the owls and machine quilted the whole thing. It was the first time I had used the walking foot on the Bernina, and it worked quite fine!

And a close up of the owls, so you can see their cute little expressions…

I sent it off with the boy today, to be gifted to a very new little girl. Hope they like it…

Happy Spinny Holidays to You!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all who ever come across this blog! Hope every one is enjoying the holiday season! And the lovely hot weather that finally decided to show up!
I spent Christmas with my family in our childhood home. Was nice to have all 6 of us under the one roof again, plus partners and grandparents and family pets.
We spent a lot of time in the kitchen, mum, the eldest sibling and myself all spinning away, my other sister stitching and everyone else doing whatever they do – reading, studying, sleeping in their chairs!
I managed to finally get that lovely red wool that I posted about a while ago plied. Alas I didn’t do anything spectacular with it with beads and whatnot like I had thought about, I found a nice red wool to ply with it.

My sister received a spinning wheel for Christmas, luckyduc! So Mum had her wheel out as well, to show her how its done! So in the kithen we had two spinning wheels, Mum on one and Sophie on the other, and me in the middle with my drop spindle!

It was a productive and fun Christmas in our house! And a learning curve too! There were a couple of beautiful balls of yarn produced, but best of all we enjoyed each others company and had many a laughs!

Happy New Year everyone!

whittling hooks

A couple of years ago, whilst visiting my brother, I was witness to something I didn’t think possible. He had just picked up a piece of fire kinling and his leatherman and started whittling it down into a fine stick. While me and my sister watched, we egged him on and made him try to make a crochet hook. Well, he succeeded. He whittled a chunky crochet hook, that I must add, worked perfectly well!
Recently I came across a blog, http://jimbosfrontporch.blogspot.com/ , and I was once again reminded that it was possible to create your own crochet hooks! When my mum left me a bag full of fire wood for our little outside firebucket, I couldn’t resist trying my own hand at it! My first try turned out ok, but my second turned out pretty awesome and is really nice to work with!

top is my first try, bottom is my much improved second try.

how good did I get those hooks!

Spinning Red

I just finished this, like right then, two minutes ago, with just enough time to take a photo…

It is merino/silk 50g. Hand spun on my beautiful drop spindle! I am still yet to ply it and all that other stuff, but I was too excited and just had to share! I was thinking maybe trying to ply it with some beads… not sure yet…

Hey there!

Finally getting back to some normality in life after months of moving pains, no internet, living out of boxes and such-not.
My mum made the long journey down to drag us along to the craft show on the weekend. I’m very glad she did. It turned out to be a day filled with shopping, retail therapy and just hanging out and relaxing with my mum, something that doesn’t happen very often. There was a great variety of crafts, so to whoever said it’s mainly quilting stuff, I say, did you not walk past the first two stands? There was something for everyone, cross stitch, quilting, scrapbooking, knitting, beading, felting, oh my, the list goes on! And the insain display from the Canberra Quilters is always worth a look! As is the TexStyle display of HSC students work!

Now that I have settled into the new house, been exposed to new and exciting crafts and products, the creative juices are flowing! Be sure to watch this spot for my mismatched projects!
